Topic: “NATIONAL UNITY DAY AS A FACTOR OF NATIONAL PRIDE”

September 17th is a special day in Belarus. A holiday that represented the restoration of historical justice, filled with new meanings. This is a holiday for all Belarusians.

National Unity Day is not just a date on the calendar. It, like the Victory Day and Independence Day celebrated by all of our country, is a living link between the times when the lessons of history become the foundation for the future. This is not a celebration of the past, but of the present, which we are building today and now, building with our own hands. It symbolizes the inviolability of borders and the ethnic cohesion of the Belarusian nation.

Therefore, National Unity Day has a special significance. It allows us to preserve our national identity. To save the nation. Preserving her humanity is a real brand of Belarus.

The idea of establishing National Unity Day was voiced at the highest level in February 2021 at the VI All-Belarusian National Assembly, held under the slogan “Unity. Development. Independence.” And already on June 7, 2021, a new holiday appeared in our calendar in accordance with the Decree of the Head of State Alexander Lukashenko.

But even though this is only the sixth time we have celebrated National Unity Day in sovereign Belarus, it is not a new day for us. The People’s Assembly of Western Belarus, held on October 28-30, 1939, adopted a declaration on the proclamation of Soviet power and the entry of Western Belarus into the BSSR. It was then that September 17 was declared a holiday – the day of liberation of the workers of Western Belarus from the oppression of the Polish bourgeoisie and landlords. And in almost all cities of the western part of our republic, the streets of September 17th appeared and still exist today.

The historical basis of National Unity Day was the reunification of the BSSR and Western Belarus, which was forcibly incorporated into Poland in 1921 for almost two decades without taking into account the opinion of the Belarusian people. It was only on September 17, 1939, that Belarusians were given the opportunity to live in a single state, carry out socio-economic transformations, and develop culture and education in the interests of the entire people.

“The memory of this event lives in the hearts of Belarusians, because it became an act of historical justice against the Belarusian people, divided against their will. – stressed the President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. – That’s why sovereignty and independence are needed, so that we will never be divided against our will again. September 17 symbolizes the inviolability of the territorial and ethnic consolidation of the Belarusian nation.”

National Unity Day is a fundamental date in the calendar of public holidays of the Republic of Belarus and a significant factor of national pride. On the eve of the holiday, which symbolizes the reunification of our people in the fall of 1939 in a single state and the process of consolidation of the Belarusian nation, we are especially clearly aware: the strength of Belarusians lies in unity, sincere desire to benefit the Fatherland, the inviolability of traditions and the continuity of generations!

But today it is not enough to say that we are for sovereignty, for a strong and prosperous Belarus. There must be a real contribution from every citizen to this most important common cause. First of all, through conscientious work and high-quality fulfillment of the duties assigned to each of us. This is doubly relevant in the five-year quality plan and triple relevant in the context of the geopolitical storm we are in.
