July 20, 1994 is the day on which the history of the Institute of the Presidency of modern Belarus began.

After a difficult struggle with five other candidates, on July 10, 1994, Alexander Lukashenko was elected President of the Republic of Belarus, receiving the support of 80.3% of the citizens who took part in the second round. The first years of his presidency were entirely devoted to fulfilling the main promise made to the voters – to lead the country away from the abyss.
