In the Republic of Belarus, June 22 is a memorable date – the Day of National Remembrance of the Victims of the Great Patriotic War and the Genocide of the Belarusian people. 85 years ago, on June 22, 1941, at dawn, the German army treacherously attacked the Soviet Union without declaring war. Belarus was among the first Soviet republics to take a powerful blow from the enemy.
As President Alexander Lukashenko noted on May 7, 2026, when presenting state awards to honored representatives of various fields on the eve of the holy Victory Day holiday: “Belarus, which lost every third person in the crucible of the Great Patriotic War, destroyed, burned, but unconquered, together with other peoples of the Soviet Union, saved the planet from the brown plague. This is the greatest merit and pride of the Belarusian people, the entire Soviet people. We must never give up this pride.”
The events of the Great Patriotic War became a test of incredible strength, courage and perseverance for millions of people. They left a deep mark on the destinies of entire generations, affecting every Soviet family. It is our sacred duty to remember the unparalleled feat of the liberating soldiers, the heroism of the partisans and the dedication of the home front workers.
Head of State Alexander Lukashenko emphasized this on May 9, 2026 during the Victory Day events: “We remember our soldiers, officers, Belarusian partisans and underground fighters, women who took up arms. All those who did not choose between the gallows and the enemy’s mercy, but died a hero, but not a traitor.”
Memory is a guarantee of non–repetition of the tragedy of those years and a guarantee of a peaceful life for future generations. And we will never allow what happened 85 years ago to happen on our land.
