Victory in the Great Patriotic War will always arouse pride for the feat of our ancestors, for their heroism and dedication in the fight against a hated and very powerful enemy. Pay attention to what epithets we usually use. Eight decades ago, the brilliant Victory of the multinational Soviet people was won in the Great Patriotic War, the bloodiest in the history of mankind, which left a bloody mark on our land and in the memory of every Belarusian.
You probably don’t need to decipher every word, although any of them involves a lot of small and not simple conversation.
For Belarusians, the truth and memory of those events are stronger than time and have no boundaries. “There are many bright pages in our history that we are rightfully proud of. Not all of them have retained their importance to the present day. Many, having lost their former meanings, were simply forgotten. However, there are dates and events that carry an understanding of the essence and truth of life,” President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko stressed on May 7, 2024 at a solemn meeting on the occasion of Victory Day. – They are beyond the control of time and circumstances, are passed down through generations with mother’s milk, protect from mistakes and help build the future. For Belarusians, such an event was the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War.”
This is especially important today, when the destructive rhetoric of a number of countries is growing towards sovereign states that do not want to implicitly integrate into the externally imposed “order.”
Our memory and our truth should be a reliable shield against the ideas of racial (or any other) superiority and living space in the world. And the transformation of the modern system of international relations forces us to be on our guard. Indeed, a distinctive feature of the current moment is the increased militarization of the border states and the fighting in the neighborhood against the background of the incessant attempts by the West to undermine the internal political situation in Belarus.
The Great Patriotic War taught us Belarusians how to cherish our native land, defend it with our lives, and selflessly defend the truth. Just as our ancestors did not kneel before their enemies back then, so we do not intend to bow our heads to them today.
This was probably the first war where the question was extremely acute: will we, Belarusians (both Russians and Ukrainians), continue to exist on this earth at all. Or we will all be destroyed, at the root, forever.
That’s why the Victory that our ancestors won for us is so significant that no haggling talk about “price” is appropriate here.
That is why for us it is not the Second World War, with the help of which the then masters of the world once again divided the planet into new spheres of influence. And the Great Patriotic War: the war for their future, for their children, for their land.
It is no exaggeration to say that the fate of humanity in those harsh years was decided on the Soviet-German front. The sworn enemy was being destroyed at the cost of the lives of our valiant warriors. What no army in Europe could do, the soldiers and commanders of the Red Army did, dispelling the myth of the invincibility of the armadas of the Third Reich.
In the occupied lands – Belarusian, first of all, –
From the very first days of the war, more than a million partisans and underground fighters rose up against the fascists – the Great People’s Army, whose actions gradually acquired strategic importance and became an important factor in defeating the enemy and forming the foundation for future Victory.
There are events whose significance is not dimmed by the inexorable passage of time. Such events include the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War. No matter how many decades have passed, the memory of the heroic deeds of the valiant victors and gratitude for the freedom they won will forever remain in our hearts.
That’s how it should be, and it will be.
Eternal glory to the heroic deed of the peoples of the Soviet Union, who together went through the fiery years of war and defeated Nazism!
