A SINGLE DAY OF INFORMATION

Topic: “SOVEREIGN BELARUS: FROM THE RESTORATION OF THE NATIONAL ECONOMY TO INNOVATIVE PROJECTS OF THE FUTURE”

There are special dates in the life of each state, which become the starting point of a new stage of history. For Belarus, such a milestone was the liberation of the capital of our Motherland from the fascist invaders – Independence Day of the Republic of Belarus (Republic Day).

This fateful date was fixed in our calendar, relying solely on the opinion of Belarusian citizens. This is the choice of our people: at the republican referendum on November 24, 1996, 88.18% of Belarusians voted for postponing Independence Day to July 3.

For reference:

Since 1991, Independence Day has been celebrated annually on July 27, the day of the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Byelorussian SSR on July 27, 1990.

About the terrible results of the war and the lessons of history

Just think about it: at least 12,868 settlements suffered during the Great Patriotic War. And this is not the limit. New facts are being revealed. Among the additional identified and previously unknown affected settlements, there are 104 new ones that have repeated the tragic fate of D.Khatyn, burned down completely along with the inhabitants and not revived after the war. Now this mournful list, which is called the “sisters of Khatyn,” consists of at least 290 villages, not 186, as previously thought.

During the war years, the republic’s economy in terms of industrial and energy capacity was pushed back to the level of 1913. The invaders destroyed more than half of the national wealth of Belarus. The damage caused to the national economy was 35 times higher than the budget of the republic of pre-war 1940.

And in these conditions of devastation, it was necessary to revive the national economy from scratch, which is why July 3 is a date that not only brings us back to the events of the Great Patriotic War, but also teaches us to truly cherish what was done by the generations of those years. This is both liberation and a labor feat.

The creative energy of the Great Victory gave the Belarusian people the greatest strength. In an incredibly short time, the completely destroyed and plundered country was restored.

In the first post–war decades, the flagships of Belarusian machine building were built – the Minsk Automobile and Minsk Tractor Plants. In the first post-war decades, the giants of the domestic industry were created: Belarusian Automobile Plant (Zhodino), Berezovskaya and Lukomlskaya GRES, Novopolotsk and Mozyr oil refineries, Belarusian Metallurgical Plant (Zhlobin), Soligorsk Potash Plant. The light, food, forestry, and woodworking industries, as well as the production of building materials, were developing dynamically.

The main result of the Soviet period was that the Byelorussian SSR acquired a powerful socio-economic basis that ensured the country’s further progress. It was during these years that the foundation was laid, which was preserved and strengthened in subsequent years.

Only a completely different policy could lead the country away from the abyss, the first step of which was the adoption of the country’s Constitution on March 15, 1994, which established the institution of the presidency. This has allowed our country to achieve significant success in further state and economic construction. Thanks to the decisions taken in recent decades, Belarus has become a modern European state, confidently pursuing its own path of development.

About the landmark achievements and innovative projects of sovereign Belarus

Over eight decades of peaceful existence, Belarus has achieved a lot. All the successes and achievements of our people create the history of the state, unite Belarusians in a sense of pride for their compatriots, and form the image of a strong, successful, and creative country.

Belarus does not possess a large number of minerals. Therefore, one of the priorities is to focus on the development of high technologies. They serve as a driver of the country’s economy, lead to an increase in the standard of living of citizens, help to explore new markets, strengthen the international authority of Belarus and advance science.

Today, six complex “future projects” are being implemented for the innovative development of the country: “National Electric Transport”, “Biotechnologies in the agro-industrial complex”, “Precision Agriculture”, “Innovative Healthcare”, “Biotechnologies for pharmaceuticals”, “Smart Cities of Belarus”. They have the potential to become growth points for the national economy.

And we really have something to be proud of!

On the historical path, our people had to go through the most difficult stages and withstand enormous political pressure. And today we have a unique opportunity to live in an independent country that independently determines development priorities, domestic and foreign policy. This is something to be proud of and cherish.

As the Belarusian leader noted, “The world is huge, but we have only one Belarus. Remember your Homeland. Appreciate and cherish the peaceful sky over our country” (President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko at the award ceremony for graduates and teachers of higher education institutions, June 20, 2025).

Winners are never former. We must remember this and believe in our strength. Our independence is primarily the honest work of everyone, service to the Motherland and striving for high achievements. Therefore, it is important to look in the same direction, creating a bright future together. After all, one of the conditions for the sovereignty and independence of the country is national unity, which Belarusians demonstrated both in difficult periods of our history and in peacetime.

That’s the way it’s always been and always should be! Time has chosen us!
