Topic: “BELARUS IS A COUNTRY OF OPPORTUNITIES. YOUTH POLICY AT THE PRESENT STAGE”
Everyone and everywhere needs energetic, proactive and purposeful youth. It is needed in production and politics, in business and science, in education and public administration. In the end, the dynamics of the development of our entire society will soon depend on it – and already, in general, depends on it.
What can the state do? First of all, to provide opportunities. “Belarus is a country of opportunities,” Alexander Lukashenko said on December 24, 2024, addressing the participants of the New Year’s Ball at the Palace of Independence. “It is very important that you, being here among people of different ages, statuses, and positions, feel the essence of our society, where everyone is equal in their abilities.”
Belarusian youth make up one fifth of the country’s population, and for this reason alone they are a powerful strategic resource of the state. At the same time, Belarus is currently going through a difficult period: a generational change is taking place, whether we want it or not. This is the case all over the world, but this awareness of our problems does not solve it.
In adulthood, the so-called zoomers and millennials are now entering the workplace en masse. The definitions here are something like this: zoomers were “born in the mid-1990s – early 2010s.” Millennials are “those born between 1981 and 1996.”
Please note that they, zoomers and millennials, were lucky enough to be born – and even if they weren’t born, they certainly grew up – in a sovereign state. This is a categorically different life experience compared to us, different orientations, an inevitably changed mentality, and an environment completely different from our own.
That is why it is extremely important that the connection between generations is not interrupted. It provides continuity in the development of society, it is an inexhaustible (and often the only) source of rich life experience and wisdom passed on from elders to younger ones. We must remember and know our past so that we do not repeat mistakes in the future.
Today, the government relies on the younger generation of the country. This is confirmed by the words of the President of the Republic of Belarus, which he said at the final concert of the Marathon of Unity campaign: January 24, 2025: “The next five-year plan will be the time of youth. The task of the older generation is to transfer experience, knowledge, skills, and competencies to a new generation of managers, workers, peasants, athletes, and IT specialists. The involvement of young people in all spheres of government activity will be crucial.”
Young people will replace us, whether we want to or not. And she will be different from us. Therefore, we just need to keep going, continuing and developing all those successful parenting programs that we talked about today, and coming up with and implementing more and more new ones. Including with the help of yesterday’s young people who have not yet forgotten whether it is easy or not to be young.
