APRIL 26 IS THE DAY OF COMMEMORATION OF THE TRAGEDY AT THE CHERNOBYL NUCLEAR POWER PLANT.

26.04.2026

40 years ago, on April 26, 1986, at 1:23 a.m., an explosion occurred at the fourth power unit, destroying the reactor. As a result, about 520 dangerous radionuclides were released into the atmosphere, spreading over significant areas of the Soviet Union. Belarus took over 70% of the radiation fallout.

31 people died, and about 600,000 liquidators who took part in extinguishing fires and clearing received high doses of radiation.

Representatives of the Press House staff took part in a flower-laying ceremony at the memorial signs “Akhvyaram Charnobylya” and “Stone of Peace of Hiroshima” in Peoples’ Friendship Park. Hundreds of people came to honor the memory of those who died directly during the liquidation of the Chernobyl accident and due to the effects of radiation in the future. Among them are representatives of the leadership of the Minsk City Executive Committee and the Minsk City Council, parliamentarians, representatives of law enforcement agencies, labor collectives, and public associations.
